Zebulon Pike is pictured on his 28th birthday (Jan. 5th, 1807) standing on the north rim of what would become known many years later as the Royal Gorge. He had climbed from the bottom 1,000 feet below from the Arkansaw River up a ravine filled with ice the night before. He was the leader of 22 men exploring the west for the source of the Red River.
